What to Wear for Family Photos

Clothing + Prep for your Family Session

Planning outfits for family photo shoots doesn’t have to be stressful. When outfits work well together, the focus stays on your family. A little thought ahead of time goes a long way toward creating images you’ll love for years to come.

A Few Basics

  • Coordinate, don’t match. Choose 2–3 colors so everyone looks good together without being too “matchy.” [See Color Ideas]

  • Simple usually works best. Solids are great, but one or two small patterns can add personality. Just avoid anything too loud or with big logos.

  • Think long over short. In general, long pants/jeans photograph better than shorts, and long sleeves photograph better than short sleeves.

  • Fitted is better than loose. Clothing that fits well photographs cleaner and avoids looking bulky.

  • Shoes matter. Avoid bright sneakers, flip-flops, or heavily worn shoes. Neutral, clean footwear helps the photo feel polished from head to toe.

  • Timeless over trendy. Classic styles age well in photos and keep the focus on your family, not the clothing.

For Mom

  • Wear something you feel good moving around in—clothes you can sit, walk, or hold your kids in without worrying.

  • Skip anything oversized. Outfits that show your shape are more flattering and photograph better.
  • Dresses or skirts in solid, flowing fabrics can be fun, especially when paired with a cardigan or jacket.

  • Dark jeans with a blouse or sweater is another classic choice.

  • Avoid low-cut tops or anything you’ll have to adjust frequently.

  • Choose shoes that are simple and comfortable enough to walk in at your session location.

For Dad

  • A button-down shirt, sweater, or polo with jeans or chinos creates a polished but relaxed look.

  • Stick with long sleeves when possible—they photograph better than short sleeves.

  • If layering with a jacket, keep it structured and neutral.

  • Neutral dress shoes, loafers, or clean casual shoes tie everything together.

For Kids

  • Aim for playful but put-together. Layers like cardigans give flexibility during the session.
  • For girls: dresses with leggings or tights are a great choice.
  • For boys: jeans or khakis with a collared shirt or sweater.
  • Generally stick to solids or small patterns—always skip logos, characters, or neon tones, but it can be ok to include a little pattern—think a small plaid shirt for boys paired with a small floral print for girls.
  • Shoes should be clean and simple—boots, flats, or neutral sneakers are best.
  • Most important—kids need to feel good in their outfits. If they’re uncomfortable, it’ll show in the photos.

Final Thought

  • Most importantly, the goal isn’t perfection—wear clothing that feels good and true to your family’s style. When everyone is comfortable, relaxed, and confident, your photos will capture what really matters: your family just being together.
